If you run into heating problems this winter, it’s best to try out some furnace troubleshooting tips before you make that service call. Imagine having a technician come out to your home only to have them flip a single switch to fix your issue. That would not only be a waste of your time and money, it’d be pretty embarrassing too.

All of these furnace troubleshooting tips are easy enough to be done by anyone. Just make sure you shut off the gas and electricity to your furnace before you begin. Here are some of the most common problems along with solutions.

No heat coming from the furnace

• Turn the power supply on. This switch is located on the furnace cabinet. Though this may seem obvious, some homeowners forget that they turned it off at the beginning of spring.
• Reset your blower motor using its reset button.
• Verify that your thermostat is set to heating mode, not cooling.
• Check the circuit box. Reset the breaker if it has been tripped or replace the fuse if it has blown out.

Insufficient heat from the furnace 

• Make sure the registers in your home are open and unimpeded by obstacles like furniture or window curtains.
• Check your furnace filters to see if they need to be changed. Take one out and hold it up between you and a lit light bulb. If you can’t see the outline of the bulb because of all the captured dust, it’s time to replace the filter.
• Raise your desired temperature above that of the current indoor temperature.

Blower doesn’t stop running

• Reset the limit switch per your owner’s manuals instructions.
• Turn the fan to the “off” or “auto” setting.

Annual preventive maintenance will help to ensure that you don’t experience any of these problems. It should be performed each fall by an HVAC expert to keep energy costs down and extend the life of your furnace.
